FG Rolls Out Cash Transfer to Mothers to Reduce Out-of-School Children

The Federal Government has unveiled the Basic Education Transformation Agenda (BETA), a comprehensive reform package aimed at boosting school enrollment and improving learning outcomes nationwide.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced that BETA introduces Conditional Cash Transfers to mothers to encourage consistent school attendance, as well as a Back2School Drive to cover enrollment costs.

The program targets chronic challenges in the education sector, including out-of-school children, weak technical training, poor infrastructure, outdated curricula, and low teacher capacity.

Key initiatives under BETA include:

• Teacher retraining, with a goal of training five million youths within four years
• Free tuition, feeding, boarding, uniforms, and protective gear for students in federal and state technical colleges, starting from the 2025/2026 academic session
• Rehabilitation of unity schools with N80bn earmarked
• Modernization of 38 federal and state technical colleges
• Introduction of the STEMM Nigeria Agenda to align higher education with manpower needs in health, energy, and technology
• Curriculum reform to reflect 21st-century demands, with a focus on critical thinking, digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and civic responsibility

The government has also increased annual scholarship grants and introduced measures to protect vulnerable groups, including a national anti-bullying policy and expanded nutrition and school feeding programs.
