About the University of Cambridge Studentship
The University of Cambridge Studentships are PhD opportunities funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (ESPRC).
An ESRC-funded PhD studentship through CAM-DTP supports 3.5 – 4.5 years of full-time study.
Studentships start on 1 October each year for both full-time and part-time applicants and successful candidates will be required to submit their PhD within the duration of the studentship award.

- An annual tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£20,780 in 25/26 for full time students)
- Financial support for research training – up to £900 available from your Department
- A personalised training programme, to develop research, communication, employability and personal skills;
- Support to carry out a required three-month placement, known as an Innovation Fellowship, with an academic or non-academic partner during the course of the studentship.
How to Apply for University of Cambridge Studentship 2026 (Step by Step)
To apply for the University of Cambridge Studentship in UK, interested and qualified candidates should follow any of the routes below to submit their applications;
Route 1 – Departmental nomination
- Students should apply to their CAM-DTP institution of choice, following that institution’s admissions processes and deadlines.
- If they are made an offer of admission, the admitting department will decide whether to nominate them for CAM-DTP funding in February 2026.
Route 2 – Topic supervisor nomination
- The list of topics being advertised for 2026 can be found in the 2026 studentship opportunities page
- Students who are interested in a PhD within one of these topics, should contact the supervisory team to find out more and discuss a project proposal.
- An application to conduct a PhD within one of these topics should not be made without speaking to the supervisory team first.
- Students should apply to the lead supervisor’s CAM-DTP institution, following that institution’s admissions processes and deadlines.
- Supervisory teams will interview candidates interested in their topic and will decide who to nominate for CAM-DTP funding in February 2026.
